How to check your toilets for leaks:

Toilet leaks are extremely common and are often the result of a flapper that doesn’t seat properly. This allows water to leak from the tank into the bowl and out into your septic system. A toilet can leak thousands of gallons a month, putting unnecessary stress on your septic system and often exceeding the systems capacity. Watch our quick video below for instructions on how to leak test your toilets, save money on your water bill and prevent septic system issues.

Toilet Leak Test Instructions:

  1. Lift the top off of the toilet tank.

  2. Squeeze enough food coloring into the tank to change the color of the water in the tank.

  3. Do not flush. Wait approximately 15 minutes and look into the bowl of the toilet.

  4. If any of the water from the tank has made it into the bowl of the toilet, your toilet is leaking.

  5. If you identify a toilet leak, contact a plumber for repair or use the tutorial below to DIY.
